Worth Rs 300?

"None came to my aid when I was harassed" - this is what the 19 year old lady had to say to the press. She is the same lady who was thrown out of a running train, yesterday from the Yeshwantpur-Mysore express. Her fault - she resisted the sexual advances by 4 local men and did not accept their offer of "Rs 300" for sex!    What I am ashamed of is not the advances that the guys made, neither am I ashamed of the girl. She was not wrong. Why would she be? Is travelling on own a crime? She was not scantily dressed for that matter! So why she had to suffer this?

In this case I am actually ashamed of the fellow passengers. Why did not anyone raise a voice? Whom are you scared off? Okay I understand - this lady was not you sister/mother/wife/girlfriend? But do you have to wait for it to happen to someone you know - to someone dear to you? And how about the ladies in the coach - wake up, help each other maintain dignity, and beat up these scoundrels who try to exploit women.

Every time there is any rape/molestation case anywhere, there are these famous people who put the blame on the girl. They ask girls to dress proper. "Proper" - what is proper? Can anyone please explain? Is a saree proper? Or is a jeans proper? Man.. its all in your thoughts. Why don't you actually teach your sons to respect women? Why are men told "you are men" and hence meaning you have full right to do anything? Why don't you raise a voice when for the first time the so called male in the house tries to dominate over her little sister or for that matter wife or mother? Why encourage these acts?

Only 17 hours earlier, there was these case registered in Goa, that a minor girl who is lying in critical condition in hospital after immolating herself. She was molested by her art teacher. Now, was she not dressed proper? Does she even understand why she was going through all those? I am ashamed ... ashamed to live in such a society where our kids are not safe, where they have to prove their innocence. This is disgusting.

Just few days back the molestation case in Assam - I am proud of the people out there. The whole of Assam was standing for the girl demanding justice. That was fair and brave. What is required is the people to stand, raise a voice, do not let it happen. If this time its her, next time it could be you, your sister or mother.

  2. Thanks Prashant. But the whole of society is to blame actually. Women are equally responsible.
