Dhubri - the land of Rivers!
Dhubri is a small town and the administrative headquarter of Dhubri district in Assam. Situated on the bank of the mighty Brahmaputra and the Gadadhar rivers, Dhubri holds heart to historical importance! Located some 280 kms from the capital of Assam, Dhubri was first constituted in 1883.
Known as the 'Land of Rivers', Dhubri sees the mighty Brahmaputra flowing through its heart from east to west. While its tributaries like Champabati, Jinjiram, Gourang, Tipkai, Gadadhar, Silai, Gangadhar, Sankosh play around the place! Dhubri was an important commercial centre and had a busy river port particularly for jute export.
Dhubri District is bestowed with attractive scenic beauties by the mother nature. Like other parts of Assam, Dhubri too is bestowed with natural charm. The mighty river Btahmaputra's banks provide the lush greenary for the onlookers. The surrounding hills also give ample enjoyment to the people visiting Dhubri!
Dhubri has many places of interest. Let me here write about some of them.
1. The Chakrasila wild-life sanctuary is a baby! Declared a sanctuary only in the year 1994, this particular reserve forest has a vivid variety of plants and animals hidden in it! It is the home to the Golden Langur, the flying squirrel, storks, Leopards, Porcupines, civet cats, etc. Chakrasila is also provides a view of different variety of birds including Myna, Harren, Kingfisher, Dove, Owl, Parrakets, Snipe, Teal etc. Reptiles and amphibians like the Indian Python, Monitor, Crait, Cobra, Turtle, Tead and frog are also to be seen here.
2. the Tegbahadur Gurudwara - this historically important gurudwara is located in the heart of the Dhubri Town and on the bank of the river mighty Brahmaputra. Built in the 17th century by the great Guru Tegbahadur, this gurudwara stands as a metaphor of peace. It is believed that Sikh Guru Nanaka visited this place in 1505 A.D. and met Sri Sankardeva during Guru Nanaka jee's way from Dhaka to Assam. People from far and wide, visit this place and offer their prayers to the guru and mark his martyrdom. Devotees call the ceremony as Sahidee-Guru-Parv and is observed every year in the month of December.
3. the Rangamati Mosque - Built in the 17th century by the then Governer of Bengal, Hussain Shah, the Rangamati Mosque stands as a perfect example of religious tolerance and harmony amongst the people of Assam. The mosqur has beautiful pre-Mughal architectural designs. It is believed that even the Mohmmedan soldiers used to offer their prayers in this mosque. You would also find a Idgah and a well here built during the same period.
4. Mahamaya Dham - Mahamaya or supreme illusion is a renowned temple around 30 kms from the Town of Dhubri. It is regarded as one of the shakti peeths in Assam. This temple has a 400 years old tradition of animal sacrifice prevalent. Although over the years, people are voicing their opinions against this ghastly act. Believed to be traditionally worshipped by the local people of Parvatjowar like the Kacharies, Koches and Naths. It was also the presiding deity of the Zamindar of Parvatjowar.
5. Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel - the world famous wetlands of Dheer beel and Diplai beel adjoins Chakrasila wild life Sanctuary. One can find good number of prawns, turtles, fishes and birds here. Even migratory birds keep visiting these areas.
6. Lachit Park - Named after the great Bir Lachit Phukon, this new garden cum natural park is just within 50kms from main Dhubri town. Located in a small place called Bilasipara, this park is a attractive tourist spot.
7. Matiabag Palace - Matiabag Rajbari, as it is popularly known in Dhubri, the or Matiabag Palace is in Gauripur. Located in the Matiabag hills by the serene Godadhar river, Matibag Rajbari was built by Raja Pratap Chandra Baruah. Historically it was used as a place of residence by the Baruah family. The palace has unique architecture and structure.
Apart from these, one can also enjoy aome other places in Dhubri like the Netai Dhubuni Ghat, Ramraikuti, the India-Bangladesh border, etc. Dhubri also enjoys the beautiful sights, lush greenery and hills. One can definitely visit this place if you are in North East India tour!
