Tezpur - the eternal town of romance!









Tezpur is a small town in the Sonitpur district in the state of Assam. Situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, Tezpur holds heart to many ancient reminisances of religion, love, bloodshed and then again peace. With its pristine beauty, Tezpur remain the untouched town on the northern banks. Situated around 175 kilometres from Guwahati, the Capital of Assam.

Here I state 10 places which are must visit if you ever happen to be in this place of love and romance!

1. Mahabhairab - As per the Hindu mythology, King Banasura built the Mahabhairab temple in Tezpur. King Banasura or Bana is the son of Bali. He was considered to be an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Belief is that this is the tallest shiv linga in Asia.

Though the original shiv linga is made of stone. But now part of it covered in modern concrete and tiles, thus stealing the show of the ages old linga. However, faith is what keeps mankind going and people from far and near have full faith in the power of this temple.



















2. Bamuni pahar - Bamuni pahar(hills) dates back to the Bana's age. Here one can view the ruins of the palace of Bana that stood many centuries ago. The art work on stone carvings that were used within the structure are from the 9th century. Many historical remains can be found here which bear resamblance to the Gupta period.

3. Maithan - Maithan, as it is locally known, is one of the shakti peeth in Assam. Also known as the Bhairabi temple, Maithan is around two kilometers from the Bamuni pahar. Its believed that King Bana's daughter Usha, the epitome of beauty, used to worship the godess Durga here in Maithan. The mighty Brahmaputra sweeps the foots of the Bhairabi hillock.

4. Agnigarh - famous Agnigarh is as history states, the karagarh or the jail where King Bana prisoned Pradyumna, the grand son of Lord Krishna. Its believed that Usha used to dream of Pradyumna and her friend Chitralekha used to make drawings of various princes of that time to know about the dream man of Usha. After many such drawings, she drew Pradyumna's potrait and Usha immediately related to it. Chitralekha helped Usha meet Pradyumna and Pradyumna fell head over heals for Usha's beauty. King Bana put him behind bars in Agnigarh hillock and lit fire around the hillock so that Pradyumna cannot flee. When Lord Krishna came to know of this, he was furious and this led to the war between Hara and Hari, or Shiva and Krishna.

The place is renovated and many replicas of Usha, Chitralekha and the Hari-Hara battle have been built.











5. Ganesh Ghat - Ghat or river banks,Ganesh Ghat refers to the temple situated in the banks of Brahmaputra. The temple has a Ganesh idol which keeps growing over time. It is believed that during floods, elephants used to swim across to the temple and offer flowers in this temple.

6. Da Parbatia - another hillock where we can find a gate like historical remains which dates back to the Gupta dynasty. Other stoney remains can also be found here.

7. Rudrapada - Believe is that this place has a prints of Lord Shiva's thumb! Must visit, for sure! Lord Shiva in his Rudra form, is said to have left the print of his left foot's thumb (thus the name, ‘Rudra-pada) in a stone in the temple. It is said that Mahadeva revealed himself to King Bana here. Rudrapada Temple was later built on the spot by Siva Singha, in 1730 A.D. The main temple was destroyed due to erosion of the Brahmaputra. Also, In 1897, Sir Edward Albert Gait discovered a copper inscription in Tezpur the deciphering of which provided information regarding the Ahom rulers. He referenced the nine line inscription of Harjjar Varma in his ‘’A History of Assam’’. The inscription, dating to 829 A.D., is the first historical record of Assam. The inscription was found engraved on a massive stone some 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) away from Tezpur town situated near Rudrapad Temple

8. Padum Pukhuri and Hazara pukhuri - Dedicated to the daughter of King Bana, Usha, padum pukhuri or lotus pond is worth a visit. Padum pukhuri is a beautiful pond with a small island in between and Hazara pukhuri is said to be built by the Ahom king called Harjjar Varman, after whom it was later named. It was discovered during an excavation held during the 19th century.

9. Cole park - Renamed as Chitralekha Udyan some years back, Cole park was founded by Cole, Commisioner of Assam during the British Raj. Set amidst innumerous hillocks, terrains and lakes, the park has some beautiful stone sculptures which were carried down from Bamuni Pahar. It is the center of a number of recreational activities and fun sports. The place has also been the venue for exhibitions and competitions since a long time.












10. Kolia bhomora Setu - the beautiful road bridge connecting Tezpur to Nagaon is originally named after the Ahom General Kolia Bhomora Phukan. Crossing the Brahmaputra over this bridge is quite a trip!


Apart from these there are so many other attractions in Tezpur. The 17th century established Christian cemetery. It is said the first electric power station in this part of India was also established at Tezpur by the British in 1913. Tezpur was also the proud owner of Jonaki Cinema Hall, the First Cinema Hall of North East India established by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala in 1935. And Chitraban which is believed to be the First film studio of North East India established by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala in 1934.
