Weird beauty techniques throughout the world!

Everyone in the world wish to look beautiful. And with this wish came in the struggle to maintain oneself, always! Throughout history men and women have been striving to look and maintain their facial and body image. With Class distinctions came in different sets of makeup strategies being used. However we see that cosmetic has been interwoven into the human civilization.

Turning the pages in history, we can find numerous ways that were used by our ancestors to look and feel pretty! However, not all means were good! Here I list down some of them which I find weird!

10. Neck rings -  Neck rings have been used in Africa and Asia, to make the neck look and grow longer. A girl child would be made to wear it right from birth and every year the  number of rings would just keep increasing. The belief is that, women with longer necks look appealing! How much of it is true, is history!

9. In Ancient Rome, nail color was made using animal fat and blood, creating a pink and red tint! Animal fat was still used in some cosmetic products until recent times in the world!

8. For the coloring of the lips and for giving a blush to the cheek skin, mulberries were crushed and applied. Clay and red iron were also used for coloring the lips. These not very peculiar products were used in ancient Greece and by the Romans.

7. Cow has always been worshiped and hold in high regards in India. Cow dung and urine have been used for its medicinal properties. Cow urine was used for slimming, acne-fighting, healing cracked heels and cleansing your system! God knows how!

6. For waxing purpose, the natural method of sugaring which is nothing but mixing sugar with warm water has been used since ages. At times lemon is also mixed into it and the paste applied on the hairy skin and then mercilessly pulled off  to remove unwanted hair! Ouch!

5.In ancient Rome there was a method used to scrap dirt and sweat from human bodies which must had been assuredly painful, since a metal scrapper was used. The method is referred to as 'strigil'. For heaven's sake I couldn't have tolerated that!

4. Ohaguro, an ancient age custom of dying one's teeth using mixture of oxidized iron. Practiced mainly by married women in Japan, parts of China and Asia, this custom was also popular with the males.

3. Use of cow dung and donkey's milk as a face mask! Wow, I wonder what it smelled like. This was used by none other that Cleopatra. Such stink to smell to look beautiful, unimaginable.

2. For the obsession of white skin tone, white lead powder was used along with olive oil in Ancient Greece. How about the slow deaths due to poisoning effect of lead? My, my. All for beauty!

1. Consumption of Arsenic to get a white glow was often used ancient England. This further lead to early deaths. Leaches were not spared either! They were made to suck blood so as to have a natural pale look! Heights of  weird makeup techniques indeed.

I am not sure how many of these still exist in any part of the world. But even thinking of the ways, gives me shiver. I am satisfied with my look then go for these techniques, indubitably!
