Jeans in India!!!

Topic seems little funny, even to me while I sit here to write about it! We get to see men, women and children wearing jeans pants and they are everywhere! But this very unimportant thing is a major source of controversy in India, not only today but since ages!

I love wearing jeans - pants, jackets, even knickers! And over the years I have just become confident of wearing whatever I deem appropriate! I have never followed the rule book. I must have been the first one to wear knickers and jeans in my small town, Tezpur! There would be taunts directed at me but I never cared about them! I was born to live my life, not to entertain someone else's wishes! And so I grew up.

That was in 1990. Now it's 2017 and believe me, things have not changed a bit for the girls in India! Even now, in the twenty second century, the girls/ladies wearing jeans are looked upon as threats. Threats to the very rich thousand years old culture, to the ethics in the society, to the rule book and more to the men around! Can you imagine this?

But I still wear them and I encourage my kid to do the same! I see so many positives in this attire. Let me state some here -

10. It covers my body - isn't that the main motive of wearing any dress? The very invention of clothes was to take over the leaves and barks that earlier humans used to wear! And jeans or whatever it is, meets that criteria. It covers around 50% of the body! So why bother?

9. It tough - The invention of jeans was to withstand hard work! The fabric is indeed much thicker than all other wearable fabrics around. This gives the user some level of protection from extreme conditions. One can wear a jeans for much longer periods without needing a wash!

8. Style statement -  Just put on a jeans and any other top, t-shirt, shirt; literally whatever on top and you are ready to go! Its that easy. And still manage to look your best anytime!

7. Investment - Considering the durability and toughness of the jeans fabric, every penny invested is a profit! And the number of years one could wear the same pair, an extra advantage!

6. Butt-display - They curve your butt! Yes, they do. But so what, if the butt display in a Jeans is erotic to the chauvinist society, then I do not understand why the extremely fitted saree over the butt is any less appealing?

5. No risk if you fall - Every one could have a bad fall anytime. And with a dress or skirt, the private parts and clothes underneath could be on full display of the pity full onlookers! But fall while wearing a jeans, who cares. Just get onto your foot and get walking again with your head held high!!

4. Overall health -  A study concluded in 2004, showed that people who wear jeans walk at least 8% more steps than the ones dressed otherwise. So why not? Apart from comfort, its also helping people maintain their figure!

3. Clothes don't define your culture, neither does jeans - What you wear do not define your culture. So please grow out of that thought and if you don't, don't try to impose your thoughts on others! Indian culture is rich, and definitely it respects women. So when you don't respect women, you don't respect its culture. So no way its related to the clothes they wear, jeans being not a concern anyways!

2. All girls can wear jeans - There is no category of girls who do not wear jeans. If a lady doesn't wear jeans doesn't prove that she is the best kind of lady around! Maybe she doesn't do it out of fear more than anything. So categorically, it not that "Good girls don't wear jeans"! Wear whatever you want, not what your are dictated to wear!

1. Jeans are safe -  As compared to any other dress, jeans are comparatively safe dress. The tough material and design makes it difficult to tear it off immediately!

Being safe is of course important. But we cannot say that women who wear jeans are attracting attention or wanting to get raped. Every women has the right dress appropriately as she wishes to. What is important is, not what she is wearing, but who she is! Give respect to earn it. Women is not a showpiece to be enjoyed but equally strong and intelligent to stand by any male and give him a competition for money!  So ladies, stand tall, wear whatever you like and keep rocking the jeans!
