The 'maid' affair!!!

A house has many different things to be done on a daily basis. It's a task for anyone to be doing all the work alone. Cleaning, mopping, dusting, cooking, washing; the list goes on and on. Ideally the person at home has quite a task on hand! Doing all of them daily is the challenge!

That's where helpers or maids role come in. Hiring one is another task! There would be many organizations which promise prompt service but as far my experience with these organizations goes, they are practically useless. While taking the up-front money they would woo you and even come to your home to collect the deposit amount. And then, even if you keep calling them hundreds of time when the maid doesn't show up, no one bothers to answer! Alas...Nothing can be done once money is already paid!!

Another way, that we follow in India is through the word of mouth. Ask the security guard or your neighbor to send one. After explaining what all work needs to be done, what time, and how; we discuss the finance and seal the deal. We do not have much say.   As work and time is a priority these days. So all work done, we heave a sense of relief that we have found one. But destiny has other plans. Or should I say, the maid has other plans!!

We keep waiting the next day expectantly but madam is no where to be seen. Maybe something about us she didn't like! Maybe she didn't like the price offered. And let's think of the other condition: the maid is at our doorstep the next morning. So pleased to see her!

Work starts; we train them how we want our work done at our place. Couple of days on, history repeats itself. She doesn't turn up. We keep calling her number which is switched off! At the max, if we are privileged, she might pick up the phone and start how terribly sick she is. Or maybe her cousin or relative. You name it you get it!

Having no option and having humanity in ourselves still intact, we ask them to take care and come the next day. Things again go smooth for some days. And again the sick leaves, the abrupt absenteeism, continues.

Having knowing that we are sort of dependent on them, they start taking advantage. "Ye nai kargei main" (I would not do this work) "Aaj nai karegi" (I will not do it today), continues almost every day. So finally one fine day we tend to just lose it and say, "Okay fine. We can manage on our own"

The whole process then continues. Having written this I do not mean to say that they are lying each time. I understand everyone is human and might fall sick someday. As per rules whatever number of leaves per month, we all grant! Sick leave is over and above that. But come on, we all know it's human tendency to lie! When faith loses, we lose it too!

Having a maid and getting things done our way is a Herculean task. Much more difficult than doing things ourselves. But since we cannot do everything ourselves, we rely on them. Long live the maids!!!
